A Day and Night in San Francisco

The Summer Saga continues with our short little teeny tiny San Francisco trip:

I fell in love with this city last year on my honeymoon.  This being our third excursion to San Francisco, we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted out of this very quick trip.  You see, my husband and I were on our way to Auburn, CA for my cousin’s wedding.  We turned that into an excuse to come a day early and fly into San Fran.  Some of the things we enjoyed on our prior visits include:

→ Taking the ferry to Sausalito and  lunching at Horizons

→ Enjoying the views and cocktails from the Top of the Mark at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nob Hill

→ Shopping the goods at the farmers market by the Embarcadero

→ Dining at the North Beach restaurant… delicious

→ Admiring the painted ladies and all of the gorgeous homes, especially in Nob Hill

→ Going on a seven hour bike ride from the Embarcadero to Pier 39 to the Golden Gate Bridge and allllllllllll the way down to Golden Gate Park… yeah so I’m not “in-shape” or whatever

→ Union Street shopping

→Driving down Lombard Street

→ The champagne brunch cruise (Hornblower) it was wonderful, but champagne, bad balance, and a moving boat can be a tricky combination

→ Most importantly taking photos in front of the Full House, house and the Mrs. Doubtfire house, I was so stealth… fun fact:  the address Sally Field gives in the movie is the actual address of the house (2640 Steiner Street)  It was pretty surreal to see how close John Stamos and Matthew Lawrence lived to each other, well, you know what I mean.

Upon our arrival of our most current trip, we had lunch at Kuleto’s.  We picked this place because is was designed by Pat Kuleto, whose estate and winery we visited in Napa during our honeymoon.  I don’t think I’ve seen too many places as breathtaking as the Kuleto Estate.  If you’re planning on going to Napa, I would say this winery is a must-go.  So anyway, when we saw his name on the building, we thought it would be good selection and we were right.  Perfection!

We grabbed some dinner at a little Italian place that I can’t remember the name of, but I do remember there were MAYBE ten tables in the entire place.  I was unimpressed with the food so I guess that’s why I didn’t care to remember the name.  Moving on.  It was time for dessert.  I was a little skeptical because the cannolis were pre-filled at the cafe we stopped at, but it ended up being delicious.  Actually, it was especially good – so much so, that I’m not entirely convinced that Rice a Roni is, indeed, the San Francisco treat.  Badoom-ching! Can you even take how funny I am?  I’m sorry, I’ve been alone all weekend.  I’m gonna put, friend-making, at the top of my to do list.  I’ll let you know if I break any ground.

Now what was left?  Beach Blanket Babylon, of course!  What’s Beach Blanket Babylon?  It’s a flamboyant, over the top, musical cabaret show in which subject matter is constantly changing based on current pop culture and political topics… even the scandalous ones!  It is beyond entertaining; I think an adult of any age would love it.  The singing, dancing, and punch lines are on point.  The absurdly grandiose costumes really make the show stand out.  This show makes for a great night out in San Francisco.  I highly recommend it.

Before we were on our way up to Auburn, we had breakfast at Lori’s diner.   There are a few locations in the city.  The one we went to was a loft-like space, clad with mid-century nostalgia.  The food was good and service quick; the surroundings made for a special diner experience.  It was just really feel good place – it felt like an infomercial for Time-Life’s Malt Shop Memories CDs.  That’s my favorite infomercial.  The only thing that was missing was a poodle skirt and a pair of saddle shoes!  I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast.

My Beach Boys Experience

Phoenix, AZ July 7, 2012

I washed down my Zin Burger with a Malibu bay breeze, in an attempt to calm my nerves.  I think I had less nerves on my wedding day.  A moment that I dreamed of for a decade was about to come true.  I never imagined it would, but then I found out the Beach Boys, with Brian Wilson, were touring for their 50th anniversary.  This was a really big deal because Brian Wilson had not been on tour with the Beach Boys since 1965.

As a child, I can remember my aunt playing it in the car for us, and joyfully singing along.  The boys also made quite the impression on me when they appeared on the popular 90′s TGIF show, Full House.  My love and appreciation for the group grew tremendously when I was in high school.  I was also a loser in high school and my friends made fun of me for being so into them.  I even saw them in concert at my high school in 2003.

I would have probably had a heart attack if you told me 9 years later I would meet them and sit front row at their 50th Anniversary Concert.

BTW, that guy behind me kept shouting out his love for Brian the entire concert.

It looked like Tommy Bahama threw up in there.  T’was a sea of Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.  It was great to see people of all ages having a blast.  Let me tell you, these guys who are all at or around 70 years old performed the shit out of 50 songs.   They really gave it their all (trust me, I was right there I could see it!).  It was one of the most incredible times of my life, and I’m so happy I got to share it with my husband.

Mike made the ladies swoon with his winks and smirks.  He really knows how to work a crowd.  All the guys did a great job getting everyone involved; on their feet and clapping along… even Wayne was clapping and swaying, as long as I was doing it – he needed a guide so he didn’t mess up.  He really cracks me up.

We didn’t learn John Cowsill(of the Cowsills) was drumming, until he was introduced at the show.  Very exciting stuff.  The rain, the park, and other things, was the song we played at the beginning of our wedding reception, so it was very special treat to have him there, too.  We actually saw him in the parking lot before the show, but didn’t know it was him.  He had a broken iPhone in his hand.  That’s all.

I tried to get a good shot of Mike Love’s  hand, full of “pimp” rings.  No, Mike Love is not a pimp as far as I know.  He was such a flirt with all the girls and a very funny “host”, if you will.  He made a joke about loving his first car so much, but loving his new Bentley even more.  You could tell, they were such sweet guys, and so humble even after a lifetime of such success.

 This one makes me laugh.

My Beach Boys swag.

Some nostalgia.

This is pretty cool too…

Bruce Johnston, Alan Jardine, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and David Marks

I LOVE THE BEACH BOYS! THIS WILL BE SOMETHING I’LL REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.  I FEEL SO FORTUNATE AND HONORED TO HAVE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE.
